Seeing is believing: Swave Photonics raises €27 million for Augmented Reality smart glasses

Swave Photonics, an augmented reality (AR) startup based in Leuven, has secured €27 million in Series A funding to advance its Holographic eXtended Reality (HXR) platform. The investment will help Swave develop AI-powered AR smartglasses and heads-up displays that offer a reality-first user experience. The funding round was co-led by imec.xpand and SFPIM Relaunch, with participation from other investors such as EIC Fund and Murata Electronics North America.

Founded in 2022 as a spin-out from Imec, Swave uses CMOS chip technology to create scalable, cost-effective AR solutions. Their HXR technology delivers true holography by sculpting lightwaves into high-resolution images, offering compact form factors with a natural viewing experience. Swave’s AR glasses address common issues like high costs, discomfort, power usage, and visual problems found in existing AR devices.

Swave plans to accelerate product development with the new funding, aiming to introduce development kits and production devices soon. Their HXR technology, which uses the world’s smallest pixel to create 3D holographic images, offers a promising solution for the future of AI-powered spatial computing and AR applications.
